Harbour Island Travel Guide

A Chic, Low-Key Getaway

My family spent Thanksgiving week on Harbour Island in the Bahamas, and it’s now one of my favorite escapes in the Caribbean. Known for its understated but chic style and relaxed vibe, Harbour Island is perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends. Getting here from the south and east coast was surprisingly easy: after flying into North Eleuthera, you hop in a taxi for a short ride to the dock, then take a five-minute water taxi over to Harbour Island. You need cash—but the whole process was seamless and easy. The only thing you need to pre-arrange is a golf cart and dining reservations for when you’re there!

Where to Stay

There are great villa and house options for groups, but for couples and smaller families, my favorite hotels are either the newly renovated and maximalist Coral Sands Inn & Cottages, The Dunmore (classic island elegance), or Eleven Bahama House (adorable private home feel - while not directly beachfront they have their own dedicated beach area with chairs and service)

Where to Eat

Foodies will love the diverse (albeit pricey) dining scene. A few of my favorites include The Dunmore, Queen Conch, Thai’d, The Landing, daVine Sushi, Ocean View Club, The Pink Mermaid, Bluwater Bakery, Cocoa Coffee House, and the Beach Bar at Coral Sands. Reservations are a must everywhere during the island’s busy season (December - April).

What to Do

Explore by Golf Cart – The best (and most fun) way to see the island.

Boat Day (or two) – Head out to swim with turtles, visit the famous swimming pigs, or snorkel at breathtaking reefs.

Lunch at The Other Side on Eleuthera – Take a quick water taxi ride and enjoy their organic, farm fresh ingriendents and chic setting.

Beach Days on Pink Sands – Either your house or hotel will have chairs or you can rent them from Mrs. V’s.

Friday Morning Pickleball at The Dunmore – A fun, social way to work off all that conch salad!

Shopping

Between strolling the Shops at the Dunmore, browsing The Blue Rooster, picking up souvenirs at A+ A Island Treasures, or hitting the Sugar Mill Trading Co, you’ll have no shortage of charming boutiques to explore.
